Brown Fused Alumina Blasting Range

Brown Fused Alumina Grit Grouping & Blasting Application:

Grit rangeParticle sizeBlasting performance & typical jobs
Coarse: F8–F24600–2800 μmAggressive blasting; heavy rust, thick mill scale, old heavy coating, deep anchor profile for structural steel, large castings
Medium: F30–F46300–710 μmMost widely used range; general carbon steel blasting, Sa 2.5 / SP10, ship, pipeline, steel structure before painting/epoxy/zinc-rich coating
Fine: F54–F12090–355 μmLight descaling, deburring, powder coating pre-treatment, controlled low anchor profile
Very fine: F150–F22045–106 μmFine matte finish, light cleaning, small carbon steel parts

Advantages of Brown Fused Alumina (BFA / A) vs White Fused Alumina (WFA / WA)

  1. Higher toughness & impact resistance BFA contains TiO₂ in its crystal structure, which greatly improves toughness. It is not easy to break under high blasting pressure or heavy grinding load. It can withstand aggressive blasting and heavy stock removal.
  2. Better reusability / longer service life Due to high toughness, BFA particles retain their grain shape after repeated impact. It can be recycled many more times in closed-loop blasting systems, lowering consumption. WFA is brittle and fractures quickly.
  3. Lower production cost & more competitive price Raw material is bauxite instead of high-purity calcined alumina powder. Power consumption in smelting is also lower. BFA is significantly cheaper than WFA, ideal for large-volume projects.
  4. Higher removal efficiency for heavy rust, thick scale and heavy coatings Coarse BFA cuts faster for heavy contamination and creates a deeper, stable anchor profile on carbon steel and castings. It is the preferred abrasive for structural steel, ship and foundry cleaning.
  5. Good adaptability for heavy-load bonded abrasives BFA is widely used for cutting discs, grinding wheels for rough grinding of cast iron and carbon steel. It resists crushing under heavy grinding force, where WFA would break too fast.
  6. Stable performance for general blasting requirements It has mature production standards and stable grain shape, bulk density and hardness for conventional surface preparation (Sa 2.5 / SP10).
