Brown fused alumina for steel blasting

Brown fused alumina, also known as brown corundum, is a high-grade artificial abrasive manufactured by smelting bauxite in electric arc furnaces at ultra-high temperatures. It is one of the most widely used abrasives for surface blasting, grinding and refractory materials across industries.

Key Physical Properties

  • Mohs hardness: 9.0
  • High mechanical strength and impact resistance
  • Good thermal stability and chemical inertness
  • Sharp angular grain shape, strong cutting capacity

Main Features

  1. High durability
Excellent toughness makes it not easy to crush during use. It can be recycled 3 to 5 times in dry blasting systems, helping cut material costs.
  2. Low health hazard
Free of free silica, so it generates less toxic dust compared with silica sand. It complies with industrial safety standards for long-term operation.
  3. Stable performance
It does not react chemically with steel, metal alloys or most coatings. It will not cause corrosion or surface contamination to workpieces.
  4. Uniform surface effect
Its regular grain shape creates even surface roughness, ideal for pre-treatment before painting, coating and anti-corrosion construction.

Main Applications

  • Surface blasting: Rust removal, mill scale elimination, paint stripping and surface roughening for steel structures, ships, machinery, castings and metal parts.
  • Grinding & polishing: Used for abrasive tools, grinding wheels and polishing media for metal processing.
  • Refractory materials: Applied in high-temperature industrial furnaces due to great heat resistance.
  • Other uses: Filter media, wear-resistant fillers and ceramic raw materials.

Advantages of Brown Fused Alumina for Steel Blasting

  1. High hardness & strong cutting power

With Mohs hardness 9.0, it efficiently removes rust, mill scale, old paint and weld spatter from steel surfaces quickly.
  2. Excellent toughness & reusability

It resists breaking easily during blasting. The abrasive can be recycled 3–5 times, greatly lowering operating costs.
  3. Uniform surface finish

Produces consistent surface roughness, which improves adhesion of paints, coatings and anti-corrosion layers on steel.
  4. Low dust & safe to use

Contains no free silica, so it causes less harmful dust and reduces health risks for operators.
  5. Wide adaptability

Works well for all types of steel: carbon steel, structural steel, steel pipes, castings and heavy machinery parts.
  6. Good chemical stability
It is inert and will not contaminate or corrode steel workpieces during surface treatment.
